Usually, there are few problems with bedtime behavior. Make your child comfortable, and have a bottle of diluted apple or pear juice available on the nightstand if the child awakes. Child will begin to make bedtime demands of drink or toys. Have items available to minimize the amount of time taken to settle child in for the night, and to establish a routine that the child can count on. Bedtime problems lessen. This is a good age to give your child his own room or a place he can call his own. A quiet period of music or reading is the best way to settle your child. By this age, a bedtime pattern should be well established. However a slow-down period from the days' activities before bedtime helps the child go to sleep. Allow the children to read themselves to sleep and turn out their own light. Child likes time alone. Allow time for a brief chat before their time to read. Bedtime behavior may be improved at this age to allow your child to structure the chat, reading portion of their bedtime activity. Problems with bedtime may re-emerge from an attitude that your child has toward parent-imposed tasks. This is a good time to test the child's ability to exhibit their level of self-control with the understanding that if they cannot regulate themselves, you will. At this age, most children are able to maintain a bedtime schedule with appropriate guidance from the parent.   |
