Age Appropriate Responsibilities

2 to 3 years
· Toilet training
· Assist in pulling weeds
· Put groceries away on lower shelves
· Make limited chore, food and clothing choices
· Simple hygiene brush teeth, wash hands, face and brush hair
· Sweep floor w/small broom or push small vacuum
· Stack magazines, newspapers, etc
· Help dress themselves
· Clean up their spills
· Pick up toys

4 years
· Feed pets
· Make a salad
· Help wash car
· Sharpen pencils
· Help in yard and garden
· Help with school lunches
· Help with grocery list & shopping
· Help prepare plates of food for meals
· Hold hand mixer for potatoes or cake mix
· Be able to play without constant adult supervision
· Prepare simple desserts such as Jell-O or pudding
· Make bed and clean/vacuum their room
· Tell parents before going out to play
· Help with dishes/load dishwasher
· Put most groceries away
· Share toys with friends
· Bring milk to the table
· Prepare cold cereal

5 years

· Be responsible for own treating minor cuts & bruises
· Straighten/clean out silverware drawer
· Gather wood for fireplace
· Take dog for a walk

7 years
· Care of bike
· Take phone messages
· Run errands for parents
· Water the lawn & shrubs, flowers, etc
· Get self up in the morning and to bed at night
· Carry own lunch money and notes to the school
· Sweep and wash patio, sidewalk & driveway
· Clean the bathroom and floors
· Carry in grocery sacks
· Wash dog or cat
· Train pets

8 to 9 years
· Mop & wax floor
· Clean window blinds
· Fold blankets and towels
· Help plan & rearrange furniture
· Sew buttons and rips in clothing
· Shop for and select clothes and shoes
· Help with defrosting & cleaning refrigerator
· Begin to read recipes and cook for the family
· Build a campfire, get items ready for cookout or BBQ
· Baby-sit for short periods of time (with supervision)
· Clean up animal messes in the yard and house
· Fold napkins and set silverware properly
· Help others with their work when asked
· Straighten own closet and drawers
· Pick fruit from garden, trees etc.
· Bathe younger sister or brother
· Paint fence or shelves
· Clean patio furniture
· Write simple letters
· Clean storage room
· Feed the baby

9 TO 10 years
· Wait on guests
· Learn about banking
· Cross streets unassisted
· Measure detergent 'bleach
· Prepare food from box mixes
· Receive and answer own mail
· Use simple first aid, learn CPR
· Buy groceries using list and do comparative shopping
· Keep track of own dentist, doctor, school appointments
· Do chores for neighbors (some for pay, some volunteer)
· Change sheets on bed and put dirty in basket/hamper
· Do regularly scheduled chores without reminder
· Plan birthday parties for others
· Make and pour juices & drinks
· Learn to use sewing machine
· Learn about basic car care
· Operate washer/dryer
· Prepare family meals
· Wash the family car

10 to 11 years
· Maintain hobbies
· Be alone at home
· Handle sums of money up to $500
· Be able to read schedules & take the city bus
· Pack own suitcase when staying overnight with friends
· Act responsible when in public places alone or with peers
· Earn money by baby-sitting & collecting bottles, cans & paper

11 & 12 years
· Mow lawn
· Run own errands
· Have paper route
· Clean oven and stove
· Clean pool and pool area
· Put siblings to bed and help dress them
· Able to schedule time to allow for studies
· Help parent build things and assist with family errands
· Help with minor car maintenance (oil change, add fluids, etc)
· Join organizations, do outside assignments, attend functions
   & assume leadership roles
